Breast Cancer Mammogram
Although caught very early...
   this time it was
   invasive.
Story # 1       Kathy, 37, Mother of 2, Charleston, SC
Kathy Zanin is my friend.  We have known each other since highschool, cheering on the varsity cheerleading squad together and serving as officers in our youth group at church.  Later, after going our separate ways in college, we reconnected once again through our church and have since watched each other get married and have children.

Kathy is an amazing woman, and my inspiration.  At the very young age of 37, Kathy was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram.  It was caught very early, and Kathy underwent a lumpectomy and six weeks of radiation.  18 months later, during a follow up mammogram, a recurrence of breast cancer was detected and confirmed by a needle biopsy.  Although caught very early again, this time it was invasive.  Kathy underwent a double mastectomy with reconstruction.  She deliberated after three separate opinions as to whether she would undergo chemotherapy.  She finally decided to do so.  Although she had to discontinue part of the chemo due to side effects, she tolerated and continued another type for a full year - just finishing up that year this past March.

Kathy is a fighter.  She has a wonderful supportive husband, Frank, and 2 beautiful children, Libby and Tradd.  Her circle of family and friends has proven to be large; Kathy recently thanked all for the outpouring of love and support during this most difficult year.  Kathy's ordeal has made me stop and think about how I would handle having to go through the same diagnosis had my own recent scare become a reality.  I will continue to help her and others like her...Fight Like A Girl!
